Kat Topaz was a dream to work with. I approached her eight months before we wanted to launch, and she made a very daunting process amazingly easy. She turned our thoughts and ideas into the new Tuscon Weekly. It was amazing to see her create this new look that reflected the town, the personalities of the newspaper and what we wanted. The end result was amazing. I’d recommend her to anyone lookng for an amazing, modern new design.

I have had the pleasure of working with Katherine Topaz since October 2001. She took our stagnant-looking newspaper and transformed it, turning the Oklahoma Gazette into the most progressive-looking paper in the racks. “During that 16-month process, she worked with a number of distinct personalities and helped us not only recreate our newspaper but taught us how to work together to achieve our goals. We launched the first total redesign in our 24-year history in February.

The Gazette, Oklahoma City’s independent newsweekly, is the third largest newspaper in Oklahoma with a circulation of 55,500. We are widely read and Katherine’s design has garnered the Gazette considerable attention, renewed interest, and attracted new readers while keeping our faithful ones.

Katherine not only is an incredibly talented designer, she has terrific news judgment, is a master at building teams and is a big-picture person. She also has great energy and passion for the newspaper business and understands the important role we play in our communities.

We had given Kat an incredibly tight deadline to spearhead our redesign efforts, and in weeks, she came through with a new layout that beat our previous designs hands down. It was bold and exciting. Most importantly, the new design felt like ours. We embraced it. One reason: Kat made sure the Metrobeat staff was involved in the process every step of the way, and, let me tell you, we took full advantage of her open door policy. We even made her jump through hoops once or twice. I highly recommend Kat.

Like many journalists, I used to think art was something that took up space that could be better used for words. Thanks to Katherine, I learned that a well-designed page can not only draw in readers, but strengthen the power of a piece of writing. She values good journalism and uses her skills to make it even better.
